Becoming a grandparent magically turns some of the strictest parents into the worst softies imaginable. Yes, even the parents who say no to absolutely everything magically appear on the doorstep of their children with lollipops and dollar bills for their grandchildren. It would be a sort of disease if the grandparents weren’t so adamant about it. However, if the grandparents take the grandchildren into their homes the relationship changes drastically and not for the better.
According to recent news reports, 2.4 million grandparents have opened their home to their grandchildren. The reasons vary greatly but the result remains the same. The grandparents take in their grandchildren hoping their relationship won’t change too much. Unfortunately, that doesn’t happen. More often than not the grandchildren come to hate living with the grandparents.

Sure you have seen those little rectangular, colorful things with the strange protrusions on one side. But can you truthfully say you really paid any attention to them? Today’s parents are well acquainted with them because they have more than once stepped on a few while walking thru a darkened room in their bare feet.
Grandparents can help the grandchildren during the divorce proceedings. Children during this time are adjusting to a lot of change and they have all sorts of conflicting feelings. Grandparents can calmly talk to the children and allow the children to express themselves. They can reassure the children of their love for them. This can make a safe haven for the children during this tumultuous time.
In dealing with these and many other issues grandparents have resources to help them communicate with the younger generation. In many cases, grandparents are looking for a little help on keeping abreast of the technologies available for their grandchildren. These resources include support groups, teen parenting classes, and even a National Committee. If the grandparents, are taking on their grandchildren and need a little help financially there, there are resources for that as well. Therefore, if you find yourself becoming a parent again and not sure how to handle the teens of today, remember help exists.
